OK, here is my problem. I have a 10-month old Yorkie/Chihuahua mix named Marley. I got him when I was finishing college so he grew up use to me being there. I have always used a crate for him when I was not at home and during the night (at first). Because he would cry all night, he started sleeping with me and at first, he would sleep through the night with no problems.

Now, I have gotten a job and he has to be crated while I’m gone, some times for 8-10 hours a day. I have also relocated for my job, so I am assuming he is adjusting not having my boyfriend (his Daddy) around. I try to walk him when I get home and play with him at night to tire him out. He is also in a Petsmart puppy training class. In the past few weeks, I have noticed a lot of destructive chewing. When I see him chewing on furniture, I’ll say no, spray him with a water squirter and then spray the furniture with bitter apple. That seems to stop it for the time being. My problem is that he is starting to chew things that I can’t really prevent him from chewing on such as my comforter. Last week, he chewed a hole right through my duvet when I had given him a new bone before we went to sleep. Because my duvet is at the tailor, last night he then chewed a hole through my down comforter and I woke up to a room full of goose feathers. I can’t really douse my comforter with bitter apple and when I hear him wake up in the middle of the night, I usually stay awake and make sure he isn’t getting in to trouble. My guess is that he is sleeping all day and isn’t as tired during the night and he has been waking up and sometimes he will just chew on a bone until he falls back asleep and other times he will get in to trouble. Another favorite activity of his is to chew my window sill. He has plenty of toys to chew on that are pretty durable but he has also been chewing up toys to the point of destruction where I have to throw them away. Also, I have noticed that he will pee in the middle of the night when he knows I am sleeping. He is pretty much potty trained and I am quite shocked he started doing this. I take the water away about 2 hrs before bed and always take him out right before we go to sleep.

Besides spraying bitter apple, buying toy after toy for him to chew and giving him exercise, does anyone have any ideas on what to do here? I really don’t want to crate him at night since he is in the crate all day, but I’m running out of options. I try to give him so much attention and love but it just doesn’t seem to be enough. Please help!
